250 Years of US Independence: The Ukrainian Contribution to American History
On July 4, the United States marks Independence Day — 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This anniversary brings together the shared history of freedom and democracy. After all, the history of the United States is the history of people who arrived on the American continent from many countries in search of freedom, safety, opportunity, and the right to realize their talent.
Ukrainians Who Shaped US History
Many Ukrainians stand among those who shaped the history of the United States. One of the most famous is Igor Sikorsky. The outstanding engineer, who after emigrating founded Sikorsky Aircraft, essentially launched modern helicopter engineering (as we previously wrote, his house in Kyiv is being restored).
His inventions transformed global aviation, and Sikorsky’s helicopters became an integral part of defense systems, rescue operations, and civil aviation — a striking example of how the talent of a person born in Ukraine became part of the history and strength of the United States.
Other Ukrainians and Americans of Ukrainian descent made an equally significant contribution. Stepan Tymoshenko became one of the founders of modern engineering mechanics, and Nick Holonyak invented the first practical visible-spectrum LED, without which modern technology today would be unimaginable.
That is why it is so important to preserve the memory and legacy of outstanding Ukrainians who changed the world through their knowledge, work, and inventions. Ukrainians have been and remain part of the history of the United States — in science, defense, technology, medicine, business, culture, and public life.
