Ukrainian Language in Polish Schools: Pavlo Levchuk Holds Meetings in Głogów and Wrocław

On April 14, Pavlo Levchuk, during a working visit to Głogów together with representatives of the Consulate General of Ukraine in Wrocław, visited Liceum No. 1, where the intention to introduce Ukrainian as a second foreign language starting September 2026 was announced.

Authorial Programmes for Teaching Ukrainian

The author of this educational programme is Ukrainian scholar Pavlo Levchuk — a linguist, Polonist, Slavist, and associate professor at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The initiative involves implementing authorial programmes for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. These programmes are being developed within the broader context of transforming language education in Poland and are part of the preparation for the systematic introduction of Ukrainian in schools.

The programme is carried out with the support of the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation, which works to develop Ukrainian cultural and educational presence abroad.

During the meeting, the liceum’s principal confirmed readiness to open study groups as early as the new academic year. At the same time, their formation will depend on the number of applications from students’ parents.

Meetings with Educators in Głogów

As part of the visit, a meeting was also held with principals of other educational institutions in Głogów — schools and technical colleges. Pavlo Levchuk presented the educational programmes he developed, which take into account the specifics of teaching Ukrainian as a second foreign language within the Polish educational system. The educators discussed implementation possibilities and expressed interest, provided there is sufficient demand.

Representatives of the educational community from Wrocław, where there is already practical experience integrating Ukrainian into the educational process, joined the discussion online.

Meeting with the Lower Silesian Education Superintendent

The day before, on April 13, a meeting was held in Wrocław with the Lower Silesian education superintendent, during which the programme was presented and possibilities for scaling it across the region were discussed, along with issues of supporting Ukrainian students in Polish schools.

Part of Systemic Changes

The introduction of Ukrainian as a second foreign language is part of a broader process — Poland is preparing for the systematic inclusion of Ukrainian in school curricula starting the 2026–2027 academic year. As we previously reported, Pavlo Levchuk consistently advocates the position that the question of language is a question of state policy.

This initiative not only meets the educational needs of Ukrainian children abroad but also shapes a new model of Ukraine’s cultural presence in Europe — through language, education, and long-term integration. As we reported, Wrocław has already accumulated practical experience working with the Ukrainian language in Polish schools.
