On December 8, 2025, the I International Scientific-Practical Conference “Ukrainian Language as a Foreign Language in Poland” will take place in Wrocław, drawing nearly a hundred registered participants — teachers, researchers, methodologists and representatives of Ukrainian and Polish educational institutions. The conference is organised by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, 15th Lyceum in Wrocław, and the Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Warsaw, with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine and the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.

“This event takes place in a year when the Ukrainian language is strengthening its position in the education system of the Republic of Poland. In 2025, Poland will for the first time hold a matura (school-leaving examination) in Ukrainian as a foreign language, which opens new opportunities for students and confirms the growing status of the Ukrainian language in the European educational space,” says Pavlo Levchuk, representing the conference organisers.

New Ukrainian language teaching programmes have been introduced in primary schools and lyceums in Poland this year, developed by Pavlo Levchuk, associate professor at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. These are the first comprehensive programmes of this type officially introduced in Polish education, providing systematic and professional teaching of Ukrainian as a school subject.

“Supporting such initiatives today is especially important — it is not only about education, but about preserving Ukrainian presence, identity and cultural voice in Europe. We see great demand for professional exchange of experience and for jointly developing new approaches to teaching Ukrainian abroad,” emphasised Yaryna Yasynievych, Programme Director of the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.
