Roman Shukhevych remains one of the most discussed and yet least fully understood figures of 20th-century Ukrainian history. Decades of silencing, fragmented sources and Soviet distortions have created numerous myths around his name. This is why new biographical research based on archives and critical analysis is of particular importance.

Olesia Isaiuk’s book is the result of extensive scholarly work: the author processed a large body of archival material, contextualised controversial episodes and assembled the multifaceted life of the Supreme Commander of the UPA into a coherent whole. At the centre of her attention is not only Shukhevych’s military path, but his origins, personal qualities, cultural milieu and his role in shaping Ukrainian identity.

This presentation became an important element of the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation’s international cultural and educational activities. The “Rostyslav Prokopіuk’s Current Dialogues” series has repeatedly created in Prague a space for scholarly conversations about history, culture and contemporary Ukrainian challenges — in a format that combines academic rigour with openness to a broad audience.
