“Roots and Wings: A History That Unites”: New Group Enrollment in Copenhagen

The program aims to support teams abroad that work with children and develop modern approaches to teaching Ukrainian history and to preserving culture and national identity.
The program was developed by Natalia Omelchuk, the author of the educational project “Spohady v Korobkakh” (Memories in Boxes), dedicated to modern interactive approaches to working with difficult historical topics.
“The development of Ukrainian education abroad is an important part of preserving children’s connection with Ukraine. We strive to support educational teams in introducing modern approaches to the study of Ukrainian history, culture, and literature,” notes the program’s author.
The program includes:
- Three practical in-person training sessions in Copenhagen;
- modern methods of teaching the history of Ukraine;
- online mentoring support;
- supervision and consultations;
- exchange of experience;
- practical implementation of the knowledge gained.
“Today, Ukrainian educational hubs in Europe play an important role in preserving the continuity of Ukrainian cultural and historical heritage. For the Foundation, it is important to support these teams, strengthen their capacity, and create opportunities for professional interaction. It is through such cooperation that we can shape sustainable educational practices that will help children maintain their connection with Ukraine regardless of the country in which they study and grow up,” notes Yaryna Yasynievych, Program Director of the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.
Ukrainian schools, civic organizations, educational initiatives, and cultural and educational centers working with Ukrainian children in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia are invited to participate.
Topics of the in-person meetings:
Throughout the year, participants will work on the following thematic blocks:
November 27–29, 2026: The “Memories in Boxes” teaching methodology, using the “Introduction to History” course as an example, for children aged 10–12.
February 19–21, 2027: Human rights and freedoms: the struggle during war.
April 23–25, 2027: Ethnopedagogy as an educational and cognitive resource.
After the training cycle is completed, a final meeting of participants will take place in June 2027 (dates to be confirmed).
The following are invited to participate:
- Ukrainian Saturday and Sunday schools;
- civic organizations;
- educational initiatives;
- cultural and educational centers working with Ukrainian children and teenagers.
The organization must:
- have experience in educational activities;
- work, or be ready to work, with a Ukrainian studies component;
- be ready to introduce the course starting this school year for at least two groups of children aged 10–12 and 13–16.
Important!
The Foundation supports the development of educational teams rather than individuals. That is why each organization must nominate two participants, who will study together throughout the year and together introduce the “Introduction to History” course and the approach as a whole in their hub. Participation in all scheduled events of the mentorship program is mandatory. This approach makes it possible to turn the knowledge gained into part of the organization’s systematic work and to ensure its further development.
Participants also undertake to:
- attend all in-person training sessions;
- take part in online meetings;
- deliver the “Memories in Boxes” course for children as part of their training.
The organizers provide the teaching and methodological materials.
Twelve organizations will be selected for the program, with two representatives from each. In total, 24 participants will complete the training. All in-person meetings will take place in Copenhagen (Denmark).
For participants travelling from other cities or countries, the organizers will cover accommodation costs (booking is arranged by the Foundation) and travel costs (no more than the equivalent of EUR 100 round trip per person per visit, provided that travel tickets are submitted).
