Hrushevskyi at 160: Open Discussion on the Man and the Politician
On Monday, September 28, the National Museum of Ukrainian History invites everyone to an open discussion, “Mykhailo Hrushevskyi: Between Politics and Private Life.” Historians Oleksandr Zinchenko, Oleksandr Alfiorov, Volodymyr Tylishchak, Heorhii Papakin, and Oleksandr Kucheruk will talk about the personal life, worldview, and state-building work of one of the founding fathers of Ukrainian statehood. Visitors will also be able to see a small exhibition dedicated to this outstanding Ukrainian.
The event will take place on September 28 at 15:00 at the National Museum of Ukrainian History at 2 Volodymyrska Street (second floor). Admission is free. Prior registration via the form is required.
Mykhailo Hrushevskyi left more than just a notable mark on Ukrainian history — he was at once its maker and its historiographer. His multi-volume work “History of Ukraine-Rus'” is called the historical passport of our country, and his leadership of the first parliament, the Central Rada, moved Ukraine from the category of geographical notions into the circle of state nations. Thanks to Hrushevskyi, the parliamentary system of government took root. Our national and state symbols were also established: the Tryzub as the coat of arms, as well as the monetary system — hryvnias and shahs.
Despite the historical scale of his figure, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi remained an ordinary person — with his own virtues and unexpected habits. The discussion will offer a chance to learn about him as a statesman, historian, and individual.
As a reminder, in April 2026 the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation and the National Museum of Ukrainian History signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. It provides for funding the renewal of the museum space, supporting exhibition projects, and developing new formats of interaction between the museum and its audience.
