From Mazepa and Orlyk to the Present Day: Ukrainian Diplomacy Day at the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation Space
Today, December 22, we celebrate Ukrainian Diplomacy Day — the day when we honour those who for centuries built and defended Ukrainian statehood on the international arena.

For this occasion, the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation prepared a special event: on December 19, the historical dialogue “Ivan Mazepa and Pylyp Orlyk: A Dialogue Between History and Modernity” took place. It was a profound conversation about two outstanding figures who laid the foundations of Ukraine’s diplomatic tradition and European orientation.

Participants — renowned diplomat, historian and Rector of the Diplomatic Academy named after Hennadi Udovenko at Ukraine’s MFA, Ihor Ostash, and Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Mykola Doroshko — spoke about the legacy of Mazepa and Orlyk not merely as pages of the past, but as the living foundation of contemporary Ukrainian politics, identity and Ukraine’s place in Europe.
The event was moderated by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine Ihor Kharchenko.
The event became even warmer and more touching thanks to an unexpected and very precious surprise from the National Scout Organisation of Ukraine “Plast”. During the dialogue, the scouts visited the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation and brought us the Bethlehem Peace Flame. This moment is always moving — a symbol of light, hope and unity, especially precious in these times.
