This is the first large-scale attempt to comprehensively reconstruct the assassination of the Head of the Directorate of the UNR and Chief Otaman of the UNR Army and Navy. This crime became an event that left its mark on the history of Ukrainian statehood and the liberation movement and entered the history of 20th-century Ukraine.

The assassination of Symon Petliura was one of the first high-profile acts of political terror directed against the leaders of the Ukrainian liberation movement. Drawing on numerous archival documents, eyewitness memoirs and press publications of the time, the author reconstructs in detail the circumstances of the crime, the course of the investigation, the Ukrainian side’s preparations for the trial of the killer and the Paris trial itself.

At the same time, the book goes beyond reconstructing the crime itself: it reveals the broader historical and political context of the events, helping to better understand the circumstances of Petliura’s assassination and its place in the history of Ukraine’s struggle for independence.
