How Do We Understand the War We Live In and the One We Must Prepare For?
On October 1, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, at 6:30 PM, a presentation and discussion of George Dougherty’s book “The Beast in the Machine. How Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Are Changing Wars and the Future of Human Conflict?” will take place. The event is organized by the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation and the “Nash Format” publishing house.
A retired American colonel and one of the architects of the U.S. Air Force science and technology strategy, Dougherty analyzes events on battlefields from Donbas to the Red Sea. He describes the war Ukraine is waging today as the first chapter of a new military era: robotic systems and artificial intelligence are changing the rules of combat and the global balance of power faster than governments can respond.
“Since September 27, 2020, in the mountains of the Caucasus, the world has been able to glimpse the future of war” — these are the opening words of “The Beast in the Machine.” Today, Ukraine is at the forefront of this transformation.
We will discuss whether this book can help us understand the war we live in and the one we must prepare for.

George Dougherty’s “The Beast in the Machine” is the first book in the Para Bellum series, launched by the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation and the “Nash Format” publishing house to make sense of military conflicts, emerging technologies, strategies, and social transformations. The series takes its name from the Latin saying Si vis pacem, para bellum — “If you want peace, prepare for war.”
