35 years since the restoration of Independence. Ukraine’s struggle for independence spans a century.

Back in 1710, Pylyp Orlyk wrote about the “public good,” the rights and liberties of the Zaporozhian Host.

As Russia today tries to deny Ukraine’s agency, it is worth remembering: Ukraine did not “become a state” three decades ago. On August 24, 1991, Ukraine RESTORED its independence.

For centuries, Ukrainians have been shaping their own vision of statehood, rights, freedom, and their place in Europe. Pylyp Orlyk, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, Carpatho-Ukraine, the twentieth-century Ukrainian liberation movement, the Orange Revolution, the Revolution of Dignity, and the Russo-Ukrainian war — these are different chapters of one and the same history.

We remember and thank everyone who fought for Ukrainian freedom in different eras — and those who continue that fight today, defending Ukraine, defending Independence.
