The event is organised by the Danish-Ukrainian Society in cooperation with the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark (AUD), the public organisation Hjælp Ukrainske Børn, and the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.

Each year, representatives of the Ukrainian community, diplomats, cultural figures and Danish friends of Ukraine gather near the Shevchenko monument in the Danish capital to honour the poet, read his poetry and emphasise the significance of Ukrainian culture and history for contemporary Europe.

The event programme includes the performance of Ukraine’s national anthem, addresses by civic and diplomatic figures, clergy and Ukrainian community representatives, as well as a presentation of Danish translations of Taras Shevchenko’s works, which the Danish-Ukrainian Society, the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation and the organisation Hjælp Ukrainske Børn are working on.

Among the speakers: Bo Gullak Flindt, Chairman of the Danish-Ukrainian Society; Andrii Yanevskyi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Denmark; Vasyl Tykhovych, priest of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church; Oleksii Kopylov, Chairman of the Association of Ukrainians in Denmark; Serhii Bohuslavskyi, sculptor and author of the Shevchenko monument in Copenhagen; Lesia Ihnatyk-Eriksen, head of Hjælp Ukrainske Børn.

A separate element of the programme will be the presentation of Danish translations of Shevchenko’s works, on which Ukrainian and Danish researchers are collaborating. Ksenia Frost will present, after which one of Shevchenko’s works will be read in Danish translation.

Children’s creative groups from the Ukrainian community in Denmark will also participate.

The event is open to all and aims to unite Ukrainians and Danes around the figure of Taras Shevchenko — a symbol of the struggle for freedom, human dignity and national independence.
