Third Meeting of the ‘Roots and Wings. History That Unites’ Educational Programme to Take Place in Prague on March 20–22
Over three days, participants will work on themes of Ukrainian identity and culture through lectures, interactive activities and practical sessions. The meeting will combine discussions and small-group work so participants can apply the materials in their own teaching practice.

One of the key parts of the programme will be led by Yaroslava Muzychenko — ethnologist and research associate at the National Centre for Folk Culture “Ivan Honchar Museum”.
As part of the programme, she will present a lecture with presentation titled “Ukrainian Identity: From Romanticism to Statehood”, devoted to the work of writers, folklorists, ethnologists, artists and historians in building Ukrainian national identity on the basis of Ukrainian folk traditional culture. It will cover the origins and types of Ukrainian folk art, as well as Ukrainian ethnoculture as the foundation for the phenomena of Ukrainian avant-garde and the Shistdesiatnyky. The lecture also draws parallels with the formation of modern national identity among other European peoples. Two interactive workshops on Ukrainian avant-garde artists and the Shistdesiatnyky are included.

A separate block will focus on Ukrainian ethnopedagogy — an exploration of its educational and developmental potential and how it can be used today. This block includes practical small-group work for seminar participants.
Participants will also be introduced to the “Circle of Knowledge” educational methodology — an approach that allows a cultural phenomenon to be examined holistically: through history, local studies, art, music, nature, protection and more. The programme also includes practical work by participants on pre-assigned topics.
An additional part of the programme will consist of practical workshops led by Yaroslava Muzychenko. Together with participants, she will learn several traditional Ukrainian dances and spring songs — haivky — so that participants can teach them to children in their Ukrainian schools. A master class in “Easter paper cutting” (vytynanka) will also be held: each participant will master this form of folk art and be able to pass on their knowledge and skills to their students.
The “Roots and Wings. History That Unites” educational programme was created by historian Natalia Omelchuk. It is being implemented with the support of the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.
